Ruben Witkowski, 92, of Scranton, passed away Saturday morning at VNA Hospice at Geisinger-Community Medical Center, Scranton. His wife, the former Thelma Singer, passed away June 9, 2014. The couple had been married for 60 years.
Born in Poland, he was the son of the late Isadore and Rose Chmielewski Witkowski and was a World War II Navy Veteran. During his time in the Navy, he was an Aircraft Mechanic aboard the U.S.S. Hancock. He was the owner and operator of the former Witky’s Furs in Scranton on Lackawanna Avenue for many years. He was a former member of the Odd Fellows and a member of B’Nai B’rith, the Jewish Community Center and the Machzikeh Hadas Congregation.
Surviving is a son, Isaac Witkowski and wife Susan, Omaha, Nebraska; daughters, Florence Dmitrovsky and husband Ethan, Houston, Texas, and Annie Fierman and husband Daniel, Kingston; grandchildren, Zoe, Tess, Sarah, Jacob, Lily, Rose, William, Nora, Gabrielle and Julian.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sidney Wellman, and a sister, Elizabeth Wasser.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery by Rabbi Mordechai Fine.
Friends will be received during shiva at the Fierman residence Sunday from 4-6 p.m., and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7-9 p.m.
