Miriam Esther Kaplan, 84, Scranton, died Sunday evening in the Jewish Home of Eastern PA. She is survived by her husband Edwin Kaplan.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Moses and Fanny Roth Berger, she was a graduate of Coughlin High School and a member of Ohav Zedek Congregation in Wilkes-Barre and Beth Shalom Congregation and its sisterhood in Scranton. She was also active in the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary. Miriam was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking and was always concerned about the welfare of others.
Also surviving is a daughter Sharon Baer and husband Wayne, Wilkes-Barre; a son Fred Berley and wife Beverly, Shavertown; a brother Eli Berger and wife Donna, FL; five grandchildren, Chaim Klemow, Dara Belak and husband John, and Michelle, D.J. and Eric Berley; great-grandson Matthew Belak; as well as several cousins.
The funeral will be today at 10 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Yisroel Brotsky. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Interment to follow in the Anshe Sfard Cemetery, Dallas, PA.
Friends will be received during shiva at the Jewish Home, 1101 Vine St., Scranton, tonight from 7-9 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 7-9 p.m.; Friday from 1-2 p.m.; Saturday from 7-8 p.m.’ and Sunday from 2-4 p.m.
