Elizabeth "Betty" Beck LawrenceDunmore, PA March 6, 1922 ~ May 31, 2016 Date of Service: June 13, 2016
Elizabeth “Betty” Beck Lawrence, 94, of Dunmore, died Tuesday, May 31st in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Atty. Anthony “Tony” A. Lawrence on July 15, 2002.
Born in Archbald, daughter of the late John H. and Anna Ruddy Beck, she was a graduate of Archbald High School and went on to attend business school. Prior to her marriage and children, she served as executive secretary to the president of Hoffman Corporation.
Betty was very involved in family and community and was active in numerous organizations and groups such as Lawyer’s Wives, the Monroe Avenue Bridge Club, the MAC Club, the Century Club, and served as past president of the San’ Andrea Society. When spending summers at the Village of Four Seasons in Union Dale, she was known as the “Mayoress”, writing the newsletter and planning parties. Betty loved her Irish heritage, and would often refer to herself as “Your wild Irish mother.” Her favorite toast, delivered at any event, was as Irish as it gets.
She loved all of the pets she had over the years, and they were always one of her great joys in life. She enjoyed traveling, cocktails, dinners, parties, laughing, singing, and in general—having fun!
Surviving are her daughters Jeanna Lawrence of Union Dale, and Tippy Lawrence Carrier and of Chicago, IL; her grandchildren who were the stars in her skies, Wizzie Carrier of Boston, MA; 1st Lt. Alec Carrier of Fort Lewis, WA; and Richard Carrier of Chicago, IL; and their father Richard West Carrier; as well as many loved nieces and nephews.
She was the last of the “Beck Girls”, as she was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Grillot, Dorothy “Dodo” Brogan, Nancy “Alice” Loftus, and Gladys “Nicky” McDonald, all of them strong and colorful characters; and their beloved brother John F. “Sonny” Beck.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Salvatore Lawrence and his assistant, Julie, in addition to Mary Ann Lefferts, Christine Baca, and Terri Coyer for all of their care and loving help with Betty, Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and the best neighbors in the land.
The funeral will be Monday, June 13th with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.
