Geraldine "Gerry" Dickstein, 93, a resident of Elan Gardens, died Monday at the Regional Hospital of Scranton. She and her husband and high school sweetheart, Howard Dickstein, who died in 1992, had been married 52 years.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Charles and Mollie Brettholtz Meisels, she was a graduate of Scranton Central High School class of 1935. She had lived in New York for a few years before returning to Scranton as a teenager. She was a member of Temple Israel, Hadassah and numerous other organizations, and many years ago had worked at the former Heinz store in Scranton. Her life centered around her family and friends, whom she enjoyed playing mah-jongg with until two weeks ago. She loved living at Elan Gardens and appreciated the exceptional care she received there.
Surviving are a son, Alan and wife, Betty, whom she considered to be like a daughter, Clarks Summit; grandchildren, Kim and James Conaboy, Hanover; Sherri and Ray Basalyga, Clarks Summit; and Donnie Dickstein, New Baltimore, Mich.; great-grandchildren, Kyle, Tyler, Kieltie, Collin, Camden, Shannan, Kelten and Kaiden Conaboy; Brittney, Alicia, Justin and Paige Basalyga; and Sami Dickstein; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Paul, in 1991; and a sister, Louise Golob.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon. Interment, Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore.
There is no shiva. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
