Romayne Small of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, died Friday evening after a brief illness. Her husband, the late Edward Small, passed away May 11, 2014. They were married for nearly 69 years.

Born in Scranton, PA, daughter of the late Anne and Samuel Steingart, Romayne graduated from Scranton Central High School and then attended Pennsylvania State University.

After Ed returned from World War II, Romayne and Ed were married and first lived in Washington, DC. From Washington, DC, Romayne and Ed returned to Scranton and then moved to Sharon, MA.  From Sharon, Romayne and Ed settled in Cherry Hill, where they resided for nearly 50 years.

Romayne volunteered with several organizations, including the Sisterhood, and devoted a significant amount of time to transcribing books into Braille for the Braille Institute of America prior to the advent of machine transcribing. Once both of Romayne’s and Ed’s sons left for college, Romayne returned to the workforce managing the office of a local physician for over 40 years.

Romayne was most proud of her family and she was a devoted, very involved wife, mother and grandmother. Romayne, and her husband, Ed, have two married children, Robert Small, M.D., and his wife, Stephanie, of Bellevue, Washington, and Richard Small, an attorney, and his wife, Judith, of Westport, Connecticut.  They have three grandchildren, Jeffrey Small, Samantha Small and Daniel Small.

Romayne was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Steingart.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:30 a.m. in Temple Hesed Cemetery, Dunmore, PA, by Rabbi Daniel Swartz.

Donations may be made in memory of Romayne to Lions Gate Continuing Care Retirement Community, 1110 Laurel Oak Road, Voorhees, NJ 08043.
