Rev. Daniel O. Waters 88, of Scranton, Associate Pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church Scranton died Tuesday night in Regional Hospital of Scranton.
Born October 14, 1924 in Chester, PA he was the son of the late Helen Elizabeth Waters-Paraway. He was raised in Philadelphia by Theodore and O’Learer Lowber, a great-great-great aunt and uncle. Daniel attended the public schools of Philadelphia and went on to serve in the United States Army Air Force Corp of Engineers during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He came to Scranton on April 10, 1948 and united with the Bethel A.M.E. Church where he served as an usher, was on the Board of Stewards, Gospel Chorus, and the Brotherhood of Bethel.
He was first ordained in 1976 at Little Washington, PA. He was employed for 24 years at the Jermyn Hotel as a waiter, and also at the Penn Stroud Hotel in Stroudsburg for 13 years.
Rev. Waters was instrumental in the daily operations of the Bethel AME Homeless Shelter since it’s opening in January 1994. This was his Life’s Mission.
Rev. Waters favorite passage was Psalms: 27: 1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
From his favorite hymn: “I trust in God, I trust in God wherever I may be, upon the land or on the rolling sea. For come what may, from day to day, my heavenly Father watches over me.”
Surviving are first cousins, Dorman and Gail Waters, Scranton, Richard and Jeanette Waters, California, Beverly Waters, Bronx, N.Y. and Jennifer Waters, Scranton, longtime dear friends, Eleanora Pettus and Frank Jordan, and numerous other cousins, church family and friends.
There will be a Home Going Celebration Monday, at 11 a.m. in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 714 North Washington Ave., Scranton. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service in the church. Rev. Tawan Bailey, Pastor officiating. Interment in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Township.
