Martha Shedlock Besecker Roy, 90, passed away Tuesday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born in Duryea July 22 1925, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Jaconis Shedlock and was a graduate of Duryea High School Class of 1943. Martha worked for years at W.T. Grants in the furniture as head manager. She was so lucky to have had two wonderful husbands in her life. Her first husband Raymond T. Besecker, Sr. died in 1975 and her second husband Peter P. Roy died in 2009.
Martha resided in Scranton most of her life and moved to Connecticut for 28 years with Peter. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in West Scranton.
Martha was a loving mother and grandmother. She loved crossword puzzles, cooking, baking, and knitting blankets and sweaters for her family.
Surviving are two daughters, Sally Dench and her husband Robert, Peckville, and Beverly Rinaldi and her husband Vince, Moosic, a son James Besecker and his wife Theresa, of Scranton who were her caregivers, a daughter-in-law, Janet Besecker, South Carolina, eleven grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, a sister, Barbara Cassidy, Florida, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son Raymond Besecker, Jr. who died August 3rd and a grandson Raymond John Dench who died March 31st, four sisters, Rose, Mary, Bernice, and Betsey, and five brothers, George, Tom, Mike, Fritz, and Daniel Shedlock, whom she raised.
Her family would like to thank everyone at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, the staff 3rd Floor south of the Gino Merli Veterans Center in Scranton for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Martha. Also a special thanks to Chris Rader.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11am in the IHM Chapel of St. Patrick’s on Oram Street in Scranton. Viewing will be Friday at the chapel from 10am until the time of mass. Interment will take place in the Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc.
