Josephine T. Marchese, 96, of Dunmore, died Tuesday morning at Allied Services Skilled Nursing in Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Marchese, on March 21, 1985.
Born in Throop, daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa Warnero Nicosia, she was a graduate of Throop High School. Before retirement, she had been employed by the local garment industry and was a member of the ILGWU. A very devoted and faithful Catholic, Josephine was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton, and was very active in the charismatic movement. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the Holy Lands. She was also very interested in politics and was a frequent contributor to the Letters to the Editor column of the newspaper. She had been a member of the Dunmore Community Chorus.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Allied Services Skilled Nursing 3 South, and especially her caregiver at home, Maria, for all of the exceptional care and kindness shown to Josephine in her times of need.
Surviving are her sons, Salvatore Marchese and wife, Ann Marie, Dunmore; Joseph Marchese, Rochester, N.Y.; and Thomas Marchese and wife, Lori, Athens, Ohio; her daughter, Denise Theophila and husband, Gary, Conklin, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, Sal, James, Thomas, Ryan, T.J., Jenna, Brett and Joey Marchese, Brad and Mara Theophila, Michelle Ernsthausen and Lisa Cardon; 12 great-grandchildren; her caring sister and best friend who she spoke to everyday, Sadie Barone, Throop; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Sam Sallo, Joseph and Anthony Sardo; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Marchese.
The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at noon in Immaculate Conception Church, Taylor Avenue and East Gibson Street, Scranton. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery in Dunmore.
