John P. Wahl Sr., 79, of Scranton, died on Wednesday, March 8th, at Geisinger Mountain View Care Center in Scranton after a courageous battle with cancer. He was also under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. His wife is the former Angela Genett, they would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this coming June.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of Frank J. Wahl, Sr. and Mary Polk Wahl. John was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, Class of 1955, he attended the University of Scranton. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the Chamberlain Corporation. After retirement, whenever needed John was an after school and sick day care specialist for his grandchildren.
John was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, known as Grampa and Papa John. He was a mild mannered man, who loved reading newspapers, solving crossword puzzles, and good conversation. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a fixture at his Grandchildren’s sporting events. John was an avid golfer where he was known for his long drives off the tee. He was an amateur artist, who put charcoal, or pencil to paper to sketch a friend, family member, or a landscape. His oil paintings grace the walls of many friends and family.
Strong in his Catholic faith, John was an active member of St. Rocco’s Church, Dunmore, where he served weekly as usher for Saturday Evening Mass. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son, John Jr., fiancée, Colleen Casey and daughter Lori Grochowski, husband Craig, both Old Forge, son Frank, daughter- in-law Shannon Pickard, of Eynon. His grandchildren, John Wahl III, Manhattan, NY, Brenden Wahl, Eric, Benjamin, and Cooper Grochowski, all of Old Forge, Kiana DeJesus, and Charlie Wahl, of Eynon. Brother, William Wahl, wife Elaine, Meridan CT, Elaine Davis, husband Lynn, Scranton, Frank Genett, brother – in law, Port St. Lucie FL, and many nieces and nephews
John was also preceded in death by his brothers; Joseph, Frank Jr., Robert, and a sister Eleanor Ianni.
The family would like to thank Dr. Salvatore Lawrence, Dr. Kristin Liptock and her Physician Assistant Charlie Lubash and the staff at both Mountain View Care Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their professional and compassionate care.
The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 11Am in St. Rocco’s Church, Kurtz Street in Dunmore. Interment will take place in the Cathedral Cemetery. All those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church Monday morning.
