John Joseph Murphy Sr., 91, of Scranton, died Monday morning in the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania, Scranton. He is survived by his wife, the former Retha Rose Wheeler. The couple celebrated 64 years of marriage on November 2, 2014.
Born in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Mary T. McGoldrick Murphy. He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School in Hammond, Indiana, and was a decorated Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. Prior to retirement, he was an industrial arts teacher in the Scranton School District for more than 20 years.During World War II, he was a naval gunner on the Merchant Marine ships. Later in his military career, he became an undefeated middle weight boxing champion of the Northern Atlantic Fleet. Before retiring from the Navy, he was the recruiting officer at the Naval Reserve Center, Dunmore. He was an avid golfer and served as a golf coach at Scranton Technical High School. He was a fun-loving family man who enjoyed telling stories and traveling the world. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be sadly missed.
The family wishes to thank the staff members at the Jewish Home for all of their care and compassion.Also surviving are daughters, Janette Scott and husband, Theirn, Atlanta, Ga.; Bernadette Kennedy and husband, Bernard, Medford, Mass.; and Tara Cummings and husband, John, Dunmore; sons, Michael Murphy, and Patrick Murphy and wife, Patty, all of Scranton; and Brian Murphy, Hendersonville, N.C.; and Catherine Murphy, wife of John Jr.; grandchildren, TJ Scott, Shannon Fennie, Jack Murphy, Sarah Kennedy Lopez, Michael, Jason and Ryan Kennedy, Patrick and Daniel Murphy, Justin, Cassie, Courtney and Carly Cummings, and Molly and Quincy Murphy; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Cate and Keegan Fennie, and Gabriel, Theo and Adrian Lopez; brothers, Peter Murphy, Munster, Ind.; and Joseph Murphy, Surprise, Ariz.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.He was also preceded in death by a son, John Joseph Murphy Jr.; a sister, Veronica Kick; and brothers, Thomas, Bernard, James, Eugene and Patrick Murphy.
The funeral will be Friday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Taylor Avenue. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
