John J. "Jack" Monahan

Throop, PA June 8, 1938 ~ July 19, 2013 Date of Service: July 23, 2013

John J. “Jack” Monahan, 75, Throop, died early Friday morning surrounded by his family in the Commonwealth Hospice of NEPA at Regional Hospital in Scranton. He and his wife, the former Margaret Barth, had celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary on May 22nd.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Patrick H. and Loretta Norton Monahan. He was retired from the Pennsylvania State Police and was a member of the Dunmore PSP John Hancock Memorial FOP Lodge #46 and had also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard 109th Infantry. Jack was a graduate of Throop High School Class of 1955 and the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Throop, the Irish Men’s Association, and the Taurus Club in North Scranton.

Jack was extremely proud of his Irish Heritage and his family. His pleasures in life included attending his children and grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He loved woodworking and creating pieces that his family and friends could enjoy. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family to various locations and spent many days cheering for his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. But most of all he was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed more than words can express.

His family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care and compassion shown to Jack during his stay in the 500 wing of the Green Ridge Health Care.

Also surviving are three daughters, Patricia Monahan and her companion Chuckie Tanana, Throop, Maureen Schnautz and her husband Les, Hamilton, OH, and Kathleen Brown and her husband Ed, New Britain, PA, a son, Timothy Monahan and his wife Jennifer, Throop, two sisters, Rita Mullen, Archbald and Clare Winters, West Orange, NJ, six grandchildren, Aaron Polon, Ryan and Sean Schnautz, and Maggie, Kelly, and Matthew Brown, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph Monahan.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Pennsylvania State Police Honors from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with mass at 9:30am in Blessed Sacrament Parish in St. Anthony’s Church, Rebecca Street in Throop. Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton.

Friends may call Monday from 4-8pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Center 2010 Adams Avenue Scranton, PA 18509.

Dear Margie and Family,
Carole and I are truly sorry for the loss of J.J.and what he has meant to his family. Serving with him in the PSP for many years leaves me with all great memories of him. From Gibson to Dunmore and the softball team, he was a great guy to be around; amiable, funny and a true friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
God Bless you and your family .
