Jean Shea Swift

Jean Shea Swift

Scranton, PA April 10, 1923 ~ July 31, 2013 Date of Service: August 4, 2013

Jean Shea Swift, 90, of Scranton, died Wednesday in Havertown, Pa. She is survived by a loving family that will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her adoring husband of 61 years, the late Frank L. Swift Sr., M.D.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Shea and Mary Carr Shea. She had a strong religious faith and was a member of St. Paul's Church, Scranton, and the Morning Friends at Holy Family Church, Scranton, and an honorary member of Sacred Heart Parish in Havertown, Pa. She was a woman of deep faith who shared that with all those around her in a tender and meaningful way. She was a 1941 graduate of Dunmore High School and a graduate of the Lackawanna Junior College. Jean worked for a number of years at the Internal Revenue Services in Scranton.

Jean was a member of the Scranton Country Club, where she enjoyed golfing, even having achieved a hole in one on 9! With her husband and best friend, she enjoyed life to its fullest. Together they were avid skiers and Penn State fans. Most of all, her time with and compassion for her family, especially her grandchildren, is what she enjoyed best. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She had a true magic for making others feel special and for taking a sincere interest in everything they had to say or do. She embodied the real meaning of "grace" in everything she did.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many individuals who have helped, cared for or befriended her over the years. Their support was and is never-ending and tremendously appreciated.

Also surviving are her loving children, Frank Swift Jr., Ocala, Fla.; Dr. Jean Swift and partner, Ralph Rapozo, Kona, Hawaii; Daniel Swift, Dunmore; Dr. Thomas Swift and wife, Mary, San Francisco; Dr. Patrick Swift and husband, Dr. Peter Williamson, San Francisco; and Dr. Brian Swift and wife, Colleen, Havertown; five grandchildren, Kara, Anna, Danny, Emily and Katie Swift.; a brother, Daniel Shea and wife, Louise, Arlington, Va.; a sister, Marian Wolfe, Orlando, Fla.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Church, Penn Avenue, Scranton. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.

Friends are asked to go directly to the church the morning of the Mass.

Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the IHM Center, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509; St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA 18509; or St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen, 500 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.

Dear Swift Family,
I was so sorry to read about your mom's passing. I knew your mom through your dad. He was my children's doctor. Dr Swift and your mom worked together when I knew them. His office was at your home on Washington Avenue. I have five children of my own, your dad cared for four of them, and then he retired. So my son, Timothy, was the unfortunate one never to have experienced your mom and dad,s loving nature. My wife and I loved your mom and dad they were such great people. I can still hear your dad's whistling as he walked down the hospital corridor to visit Nancy after having giving birth to one of our children, and your mom was just as happy and friendly. I am so sorry I did not make the funeral home, but hope to make the Mass. My daughter was married on Saturday, and we had a little reception at our cottage on Sunday - the time of the viewing. Our deepest sympathies from the McCormicks.

To the Swift family and friends,

I want to send my deepest condolences over the passing of your mom and friend. Yes ,Grace is the word that overwhelmingly defines her

approach to everyone and everything in life. The first time I met Mrs. Swift was in her kitchen while Brian and our friends had a small

party. That visit left me forever connected to this special Lady. I felt accepted and without any effort she made me feel like I was the only one in the room. I will never forget her !

Through her non judgmental, loving and cheerful approach to life, she has and will always provide us the example of how to live life Well.

The way that our beloved Creator intends for us.

With my love and sympathy, James Calvey

God of our ancestors in faith, by the covenant made on Mount Sinai You taught Your people to strengthen the bonds of family through faith, honor, and love. Look kindly upon Jean Shea Swift a mother who sought to bind her children to You. Bring her to Your heavenly home where the saints dwell in blessedness and peace. Amen.
