Jacob M. Mandel, Monroe Township, NJ, died Wednesday morning in the Monroe Village Health Care Center in New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Doris Suravitz who died last June.
Born in Jessup, son of the late Abraham and Mollie Woloskey, Jacob (Jay) Mandel grew up as the youngest of 8 children. He served in US Coast Guard during WWII. He married Doris in 1950 in Scranton. They lived in Springfield, MA and Trenton, NJ before ultimately settling in East Brunswick in 1957. He was the owner of Olden Paint & Decorating Center in Highland Park, NJ before retiring in 1989. He resided in Monroe Township since 1979, enjoying time spent in Florida, traveling, golfing and being with his loving wife of 62 years.
He is survived by his 3 children, Alan M. Mandel and wife Francine Portnoy Mandel, S. Brunswick, NJ; Sandra Mandel and husband Jeffrey Brown, Philadelphia; and Beth Evkhanian and husband Michael, Sonoma, CA; grandchildren Scott Horowitz, Jessica Mandel, Marlee Mandel, Max Mandel, Gabriel Evkhanian and Elise Evkhanian; great-granddaughter Emma Leigh Horowitz; nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Leah Horowitz, as well as four brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn. Friends will be received during shiva at the home of Jay’s son, Alan, 13 Norton Road, Monmouth Junction, NJ, from Sunday evening through Tuesday.
