Grace R. Fortese, 88, of Dunmore, died Friday morning at the V.N.A. Hospice at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton.  Her husband, James S. “Oscar” Fortese, to whom she was married for 51 years, died in 2000.

Born in Jessup, daughter of the late Salvatore and Marion Intore Prizzi, she was a graduate of Jessup High School and was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore.  A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she loved cooking and baking for family dinners and get-togethers, especially at the holidays.  She also enjoyed old movies, playing the lottery and card games.  She will be deeply missed by her family and host of friends. 

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Traditional Home Health and Hospice, especially her aide, Allison, and the ICU nurses and staff at both Geisinger-C.M.C. and V.N.A. Hospice for all of their kindness and care shown to Grace during her times of need.

Surviving is a daughter, Julie Abel and husband David of Scranton; sons, James Fortese and Anthony Fortese, both of Dunmore; daughter-in-law Eileen Fortese of Dunmore; grandchildren Ryan Fortese and wife Rose, James Fortese and wife Lindsay, Matthew Fortese, Brittany Fortese, Monica Fortese and Maria Grace Fortese; great-granddaughter Nora Alexandria Fortese; sister Rose Perry of Dunmore; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Sam Fortese in 2013; and her sisters, Theresa Prizzi and Carmella Siracusa. 

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family kindly requests that memorial contributions in her memory be made in honor of her late son, Sam, to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 1525 Valley Center Pkwy., Ste. 180, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

So sorry to hear about Aunt Grace. I have very fond memories of her and also remember my Grandpa's card playing stories as well. So sad for your loss.
