Gordon S. Florey of the Hyde Park section of Scranton died Tuesday at home after an illness. He is survived by his wife, the former Marilyn Gordon. The couple celebrated 63 years of marriage on Nov. 25, 2013.

 

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late G. Stanley and Ruth Gordon Florey and was a graduate of Central High School. He served in the United States Navy during WWII as a radar sonar operator on a destroyer escort and circled the world eight times. He was a member of the Elm Park United Methodist Church and a former member of the Simpson United Methodist Church, Scranton, and had served on its numerous boards and as a trustee. Prior to retirement, he was the owner of Florey Plumbing Supply and was a certified Real Estate Appraiser.

 

For many years, he served as a board member and treasurer of the Scranton Boys and Girls Club and was awarded the Governor Robert P. Casey Medal, having been recognized as its member of the year and for his lifetime of service. He also served as the past president of the Lake Ariel Landowners Association and on the board of the North Penn Bank now the Wayne Bank and was a member of the Hyde Park F&AM and American Legion Post 306, Taylor.

 

Also surviving are sons, Gordon Scot Florey and partner, Dwayne Holloway, Scranton; Mark Florey and wife, Judy, Taylor; and Kirk Florey and wife, Colleen, Wilmington, Del.; grandchildren, Gordon Scot Jr., Jacob, Stephen and Carrie Florey; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rev. Sarah Miller. Interment in Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call Friday evening at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club, 609 Ash St., Scranton, PA 18510; or to the donor's favorite charity.

Remembering the wonderful times at CHS so many years ago. Even my home from 1943 to 1950 at 1316 Schlager Sreet. What else can I say.

I work with Kirk at DuPont in Delaware. My wife, Shannon and I were very sorry to hear of Mr. Florey's passing and extend our deepest condolences to your whole family at this time.

I am privileged to have served with Gordie on the Board of Directors of North Penn Savings and Loan Association and North Penn Bank. He was always friendly, positive, supportive and generous. "Any better and I'd be dangerous."
