Geva Marie Minelli Cappelloni

Geva Marie Minelli Cappelloni

Scranton, PA February 23, 1929 ~ November 10, 2015 Date of Service: November 14, 2015

Geva Marie Minelli Cappelloni, 86, of Scranton, died at home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, November 10, 2015.  She was born in Laflin on February 23, 1929, the second daughter of the late Fiorello and Rose Coccia Minelli.  She attended Plains School, graduating in 1945, and then completed studies at The Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business. She was employed at Bloch Brothers Insurance as an administrative assistant until the birth of her first child.

In 1952 she married Albert Cappelloni, and they set up residence on Webster Ave. in Scranton, directly across from the church of St. Francis of Assisi, where they raised their six children over the next years. Geva was very involved in the parish fundraisers and in the Altar and Rosary Society, serving as its president and in other offices throughout the years. Geva remained an active member of St. Francis Parish until its closure, when she joined SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore.

She was a woman of great faith and instilled that faith in her children by teaching and by example. Together, she and her husband provided for the well-rounded education of all of their children in academics, arts, and athletics, and they guided each of them through college and higher education to adulthood. She loved to dance with her husband, who, likewise, loved to dance with her.  She enjoyed reading and playing any type of card game with her family and friends. Many evenings were spent at the kitchen table laughing and playing pinochle or rummy or scopa. She also enjoyed following her children and grandchildren to whatever sport or play or event they participated in.

Geva was well-known for her cooking and baking and for her hospitality and her extraordinary kindness and generosity to all those with whom she came in contact, and, of course, like any great cook, she loved having her family and friends around to cook for, especially during the holidays.  She was also a sports fan and particularly enjoyed following the Yankees and Penn State football as well as college basketball. Any sport her children liked, she took a liking to as well.

She firmly believed in the power of prayer, and prayed the rosary daily, keeping in mind the needs and welfare of her family as well as her friends and acquaintances.  In her illness of the past several years, she placed her trust in God and continually urged her family not to worry about her.

Geva faced her final days with faith and courage, and she rejoiced in knowing the love of her husband, children, grandchildren, and new great-granddaughter, even as she prepared to join the family members who have gone before her into the kingdom of everlasting life. Those who awaited her at her passing include her parents and her sister, Clara Minelli Egner.

She loved her family deeply, and she will be missed with great sadness by her husband of 63 years, Albert; her children John and his wife, Mary Ellen, Scranton; Albert and his wife, Patti, Sudbury, MA; Reverend David, Dunmore; Paul and his wife, Donna, Harleysville; Joseph, Clarks Summit; and Theresa Cappelloni Demyan, Scott Township; grandchildren Susan Cappelloni Markovich; Katie, Meaghan, Alison, Lauren and Madeline Cappelloni; and Willie, Sarah, and Isabella Demyan; great-granddaughter Grace Geva Markovich, born November 6, 2015; and her sister, Marietta Minelli, Wilkes-Barre, who was her constant companion and helper.  She is also survived by cousins here and in Italy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by her son, Rev. David Cappelloni, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 208 Smith St., Dunmore, on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at 11 AM. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, and interment will be in the Italian-American Cemetery in Scranton’s South Side.

Friends may call from 4 PM to 8 PM on Friday, November 13 at the funeral home. Donations in Geva’s memory may be made to the Grotto Project at SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish, 303 Smith St., Dunmore 18512.

I'd like to extend my deepest sympathies to the entire Cappelloni family, particularly Mr. Cappelloni. Mrs. Cappelloni was a wonderful wife and mother whose spirit and generosity touched so many lives. I have many fond memories of her hospitality and willingness to host Penn State basketball team pizza parties in your home. Please find comfort in your cherished memories and the thought she is now at peace with the Lord. Tom Donahue & family.
