Gene George Coyer, 78, of Scranton, died Wednesday afternoon in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore. His wife to whom he was married for 35 years, the former Elaine Matyassi, died in 2011.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Anthony and Josephine Ferraro Coyer, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Scranton. Prior to retirement, he was employed by Harper Collins Publishers, and had served for over 20 years with the U.S. Navy and the Army National Guard. He was a member and acting secretary of the Smith Street Social and Civic Club in Dunmore.
Gene was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather who never complained or wanted for much, never wanting anyone to worry about him. He always made it a point to provide for his family. He was an avid Red Sox fan, and also enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns. He was an especially dedicated fan of his high school alma mater’s football team, the Dunmore Bucks, and loyally followed them season after season, going to nearly every game.
Surviving is his son, Leonard Coyer and wife Karrie of Pittsburgh; his little dolly, granddaughter Carolynn Elaine; sister Gloria Messner and husband John of Dunmore; and brother Pete Coyer of Dunmore; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with mass at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Interment with military honors will follow in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Dunmore.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6-9 p.m.
