Donald V. "Zeke" Granza

Scranton, PA January 4, 1933 ~ May 5, 2016 Date of Service: May 9, 2016

Donald V. "Zeke" Granza, 83, Scranton, died Thursday in the Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife, the former Romayne E. Siekierka, died in 2010.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Michael and Catherine Beadle Granza. He had been a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish, South Scranton, and its Young Adults Club. He was educated in Scranton Public Schools and served in the Army during the Korean War. Before retirement, he was employed as a butcher with Standard Beef Co., and Pasqualichio Bros., both in Scranton.

An avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and bird-watching, he also enjoyed spending time with family and his beloved dog, Bella, at his cottage at Lake Spangenberg. As a self-taught guitar player, he was a member of the band Guys and Dolls and other locals bands over the years. He spent many hours and had a special bond with his grandson, Donald Jr., reminiscing about the numerous country music entertainers he had the pleasure of meeting, including Ernest Tubbs and Wanda Jackson, and had been invited to become a member of the band on the Merv Griffin Show.

He truly was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who will be missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna Walsh and her financé, John Waznak Sr.; and his son, John Waznak Jr., all of Scranton; a son, Donald J. Granza Sr., Scranton; grandchildren, Heather Caruso and husband, Chris; Donald J. Granza Jr. and Jimmy Walsh; and great-grandchildren, Ava Marie and Dominick Caruso; a sister, Delores Williams; nieces, nephews and his former daughter-in-law, Kim Granza Thomas.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Eddie Walsh; and a brother, Robert.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave., South Scranton. Interment in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Cemetery, Davis Street. All friends attending the Mass are invited to go directly to the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, 34th Street and Civic Center Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19104-4399, in memory of his late grandson, Eddie Walsh.
