In Remembrance of Alfonsina Riggi

Alfonsina Riggi

Alfonsina Riggi

Dunmore, PA April 18, 1921 ~ September 4, 2012 Date of Service: September 7, 2012

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my beloved mother, Alfonsina Riggi. Mom was a woman of unwavering faith, courage, and determination. Mom’s spiritual bond with God and St. Padre Pio enabled her to overcome the many challenges she encountered during World War II as a young woman to the crises she faced as she aged.

Born in Vastro, Italy, my mother left her native land as a young war bride to begin a journey filled of uncertainties, for she faced a new country, customs, people and language.

Her perseverance and strong will allowed her to succeed in any endeavor from adjusting to a new life, cooking a wonderful meal for us, to designing and sewing my clothes.

For 30 years she worked in the Globe Store and became an accomplished and masterful seamstress. She provided a loving and warm home for dad and me. Her dedication to us was the cornerstone of our family.

Mom’s remarkable spirit was my inspiration. She motivated me through her love and guidance. Her passion for her family was reflected in the daily meals she prepared, the beautiful home she kept, and the exquisite clothes she designed and made.

After the death of my father Cataldo in 1963, mom was employed by the Globe Store where she was recognized as a talented, creative and accomplished seamstress.

Mom’s faith sustained her through the many unexpected events in her life. Mom was truly a woman of substance. To those who knew her may she continue to live in your memories and conversations. To those who had not had the opportunity to know her perhaps these thoughts have given you a glimpse of the remarkable woman who is my mom. She will always be a part of my present. I hope others will have the opportunity to know someone who is such a beautiful spirit.

Family and friends are invited to join me on Friday at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis funeral home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore from 9:45a.m. till 10:45a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore. Interment, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Dunmore

If you would like to remember her in a special way please send a donation to Convento S. Maria de Grazie, 71013, San Giovanni Rotondo, Foggia.

Our journey which began 65 years ago has only been separated temporarily. In time we will once again be together. I thank all of you who were in some way a part of this journey.

I worked in the Globe Store during high school and college and was often sent to alterations to consult with your mom. A beautiful and sweet woman who was an expert in her field. Obviously, she raised a wonderful and loving daughter who composed such a lovely tribute. My deepest sympathy to you for your loss and may you find much comfort in your beautiful memories.

We're very sorry to hear of the loss of your mother. My mother, Anna Palermo and she were great friends ever since 1946, and shared a common journy from Italy. I can still vaguely remember the both of you! Mom is still around, and had occasionally asked about her through my aunt, Anna Murtaugh. Mom sends her prayers and sympathy. The memorial you wrote does her great honor, as she deserved.

Dear Lucia,

What a wonderful tribute to your Mom. Her obituary was beautifully written and captured so much of her.

I too worked at The Globe Store as department manager and buyer of the better dress department so I knew her well. Indeed, she was very talented and did beautiful work. I remember she always wore black to honor your father and I believe she visited St. Peters church on her way to work every day.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
