Sidney Lebowitz, 87, of Scranton, passed away Thursday evening after a brief stay at the Jewish Home of Eastern PA. His wife is the former Ruth Gromer to whom he was married for 58 years.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Morris and Anna Moskowitz Lebowitz. Sidney was a decorated U.S. Army Veteran of both World War II and the Korean War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. He acted as Quartermaster for the local chapter of the Jewish War Veterans and was also active with PARSE.

Sidney was a retired employee of the State of Pennsylvania and prior to that, along with his late brother Emanuel, operated Abe’s Delicatessen in Scranton until the late 1970’s. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who would always try to make you laugh with a joke or a story.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Elan Gardens and the Jewish Home as well as V.N.A. Hospice who all helped to keep him comfortable in his times of need.

In addition to his wife Ruth, a resident of Elan Gardens, he is survived by sons Gary, Scranton, and Mark and wife Eileen, Los Angeles, CA; a grandson Corey, Los Angeles, CA; sisters Lila Sclawy, Washington D.C. and Judy Labowitz, Chicago, IL; a brother Jimmy, Laguna Woods, CA; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by sisters Sadie Roth, Selma Greenes and Phyllis Fester; and brothers Emanuel Lebowitz and Aaron (A.J.) Lawrence.

The funeral will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn. Interment in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.

Shiva will be observed at the home of Gary Lebowitz, 1013 E. Gibson St. on Sunday from 4-6p.m. and Monday from 12-3p.m.
