Catherine Hanson Schappert, 57, of Plains, passed away Wednesday evening in her home after an illness. She was the wife of David G. Schappert, to whom she has been married 32 years.

Born on November 24, 1954, in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of Jane Fox Hanson, Wilkes Barre and the late Robert J. Hanson. Cathy graduated from Bishop Hoban High School, Wilkes-Barre. She earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from King’s College and a Master of Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She also earned an M.S. in Instructional Technology from Marywood University. She started her career at the Osterhout Free Library and was the Head of Public Services at Eugene S. Farley Library, Wilkes University, before leaving in 1987 to join the library staff at Marywood as Coordinator of Automated and Technical Services and Director of the Library Automation Project. In 1995, she became Director of Library Services and later Assistant Vice President for Library Services.

Also surviving are two brothers, Robert and wife Lisa, The Villages, Florida, and Mark, Wapwallopen, two sisters, Mary Jane Sherman and husband Harry, Wilkes-Barre, and Susan Libertoski and husband Frank, Harvey’s Lake; , a sister-in-law Rosann Hanson, Wapwallopen, a sister-in-law, Susan Schappert Hellerstein and husband Daniel, Wheaton, Maryland, 4 nieces, 8 nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Monday at 9:30am in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

 Friends may call Sunday 2-5pm. There will also be a memorial service at the Marywood Chapel on April 15 at 2 pm. Donations may be made to  Generation to Generation c/o the Luzerne Foundation 140 Main Street Luzerne, PA 18709, or to the charity for pets of one’s choice.

Just learned of Cathy's passing. May you be blessed with comfort only the Lord can do in these days. How I remember the days of work in PaLAwith Cathy, they were great. I'm retired from geneva library and miss you all. Blessings & Peace.

I will always remember Cathy as a wonderful person. She inspired and encouraged me in my life. She was a very special lady and I am so sorry to hear this sad news.

Cathy was a wonderful person and a dedicated librarian. Her humble pressence will be missed by all who knew her,myself included. To her husband and family, may you find strength during this difficult time.

I'm sorry I couldn't attend Cathy's service. Her picture from Cape Cod has been sitting on my desk and I see her daily. She will always be in my prayers.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Cathy was a wonderful person and friend. We didn't keep in touch as much as we should have, but I know she loved you all so much.
I can't imagine your grief, I am haveing a hard time just even believing. Please know you are all in my prayers and please let me know if I can do anything for you.
